Here I had the chance to experience one of Colombia’s most beautiful traditions up close: the Barranquilla Carnival. More specifically, I learned a lot about mapalé, an Afro-Colombian rhythm that, until then, was completely new to me.
I want to thank all the members of Bambazú, who not only shared their experiences with me as part of the group and the carnival, but also allowed me to join them during the parade and capture these beautiful moments.
It’s worth mentioning that, although the Rio de Janeiro Carnival might be the most famous in the world, Barranquilla’s Carnival is much bigger than many people imagine. It’s an event anyone would love to experience at least once in their lifetime — and one I can’t wait to return to.
