JUGAR A SER MAYOR

DIRECTOR´S STATEMENT:

Growing at a different pace than what society expects is something that constantly crosses my mind — a theme I’ve always carried with me throughout my life.

The truth is, our personal growth is shaped by the experiences we’ve lived — and whether they come earlier or later in life has a huge impact on where we find ourselves. That can be terrifying. We tend to panic at the feeling of being stuck in a certain stage of life, unable to see the progress we imagine we’d be making if we were going through those experiences.

Feeling stuck can happen at any age, but it’s during adolescence that we’re most vulnerable — everything we experience and feel at that stage shapes who we’ll become and builds our deepest sense of self. Depending on when it happens, the same experience will never impact us the same way — living it at 13 is nothing like living it at 21. We are who we are because of the child we once were.

Sexual awakening and the loss of innocence are some of those defining moments I’m talking about. Add to that the taboo surrounding the topic itself, and it’s no wonder that when we begin to experience it, we tend to keep all those emotions to ourselves — only expressing them once we finally feel comfortable with them. The game of spin the bottle will forever be tied to that stage; it’s often the first time we publicly explore that side of ourselves. It’s the game where you first start to flirt with the idea of being desired — and desiring someone in return.

SINOPSIS:

Elena throws a birthday party to celebrate turning 13, but when her friends suggest playing spin the bottle, she starts questioning for the first time whether she’s truly ready to grow up. After trying — and failing — she retreats to her room, where her mother eventually comes in and realizes that Elena still longs for her protection and needs it more than ever.
